Carousels

Carousels are platforms that rotate about a central axis, also searched for as roundabouts. What a carousel contributes to a play area is that it cannot be used alone. Someone has to push for the platform to turn, and the pusher has to jump on at some point; speed and direction are settled between users. That arrangement — taking turns, dividing the work, negotiating — produces a kind of social interaction a slide or swing does not. Serving several children at once, it also raises capacity in busy areas.

The target age is generally six and over. Rotation builds speed and requires a child to combine grip strength with a sense of balance, which makes it unsuitable for the youngest users. Where pre-school children are also expected on the site, the carousel should sit well away from the section set aside for them.

In siting, what distinguishes a carousel is that its safety area is circumferential. A swing's area stretches along one axis; a carousel needs an even clear band all around the platform, because a child leaving a moving platform travels off on a tangent. Nothing may stand in that band — no bench, litter bin, tree, kerb, lighting column or other unit — and pedestrian routes must pass outside it.

A second siting detail is ground level. The gap between platform and ground must be even all round; on a sloping or incompletely settled base the platform drops closer to the ground on one side, creating both a pinch risk and friction in rotation. Levelling the ground before installation therefore deserves attention.

The impact-absorbing surfacing beneath is planned less around platform height than around the likelihood of being thrown off, and it must cover the whole circumferential band. A carousel installed on a hard surface is a serious risk despite its low height. These units fall under TS EN 1176, the standard for children’s playground equipment. The difference between seated and standing models is functional. Seated platforms hold the user in a fixed position and are open to younger children; standing types allow faster rotation and more active use, which pushes the target age upward. Figure-mounted versions are a variation on the seated arrangement and bring role play into it. Busy neighbourhood parks tend to favour the seated model, school grounds the standing one.

One characteristic belongs in any capacity planning: the more children using a carousel at once, the faster it turns. The equipment has no built-in crowd limit, which means supervision matters more around a carousel than around other units at peak times. For that reason it belongs where it can be seen from the supervision point, with open space around it.

Installation requires a concrete foundation and central anchoring. In maintenance the part to watch is the hub bearing: noise, vibration or increasing resistance while turning all indicate wear and should be dealt with promptly. Keeping the platform-to-body gap constant, checking handrail tightness and preserving the slip resistance of the surface are also part of the monthly review.
